At Park Hill South Rugby we teach teamwork, fundamentals, sportsmanship and proper technique. We pride ourselves in the manner in which our young men carry themselves. The safety of the players is the number one priority.
Rugby is the ultimate team sport. It is 15 vs 15. The sport involves tackling, running with the ball, kicking the ball and constant, highly vigorous activity. The sport has been around since about 1845 and has evolved mightily through the years. The current form of the game is highly controlled (to provide for the safety of the players) and yet highly action-packed. Although it isn't very popular in the USA yet, it meets the criteria that most Americans look for in a team sport: fast paced, full contact, high scoring, constant action.... This is why we are dedicated to doing our part to grow the sport in any way we can.
A great thing about rugby is there is a position on the field for athletes of all shapes and sizes. The best teams are made up of a truly diverse group of athletes. It is important to have guys that have strength, and others that have speed. This combination of athletes makes for a strong team.
In our athletes we stress fitness. Our sport requires a high amount of endurance from all players. This is very controllable. Each athlete can train to increase their endurance levels to a degree that makes them an asset on the pitch.
We are 'loosely' connected to Park Hill South High School. We are not a varsity sport yet because rugby is not one of the official sports of MSHSAA. Hopefully it will be soon. We are a club sport. Every one of our players attends Park Hill South. We wear the purple and black of the school and we are called the Panthers. All four of our coaches attended Park Hill High School (before there was a South) and played for the rugby team at Park Hill, which was formed in 1992. The ideals and beliefs of Park Hill South Rugby was all derived out of the experiences and successes of the Park Hill teams of the 90s.
